Warning: Garmin TopoActive 2026.10 Map Update Is Bricking Edge and Forerunner Devices

Garmin's TopoActive 2026.10 map update is causing a dangerous boot loop on Edge 540, Edge 840, Edge 1040, and Forerunner devices. Do not install this update until Garmin issues a fix.

If Garmin Express or the Garmin Connect app is prompting you to install the TopoActive 2026.10 map update – stop. Do not install it. A significant number of users have reported that this update permanently bricks their device with an unrecoverable boot loop.

What Is Happening

After installing the TopoActive 2026.10 map pack, affected devices enter a continuous restart loop. The screen repeatedly shows "Saving Diagnostics" before the device reboots – over and over, with no way to break out of it.

The issue appears to be triggered during normal use after the update is applied, often during an active ride or navigation. Many users never make it to their next ride at all.

Which Devices Are Affected

Confirmed reports come from owners of:

  • Garmin Edge 540
  • Garmin Edge 840 / Edge 840 Solar
  • Garmin Edge 1040 / Edge 1040 Solar
  • Garmin Forerunner 970
  • Garmin Fenix series (multiple models)
  • Garmin Epix Gen 2

If your device supports the TopoActive map pack and you are prompted to update to 2026.10, consider yourself at risk until Garmin releases a fix.

What Garmin Has Said

Garmin has acknowledged the issue on their community forums. A staff member confirmed they are collecting information from affected users – but as of now, no fix, no patched map update, and no official workaround has been published.

Can You Recover a Bricked Device?

Some users report partial success with the following method – but it is not guaranteed to work:

  1. Allow the battery to drain completely.
  2. Connect the device via USB while holding the Lap button to enter loader mode.
  3. If the device appears as a drive, navigate to the Newfiles and RemoteSW folders and delete their contents.
  4. Safely eject and power the device back on normally.

A small number of users also report that the boot loop eventually stopped on its own after leaving the device untouched overnight.

However, for many users, no recovery method has worked. In those cases, Garmin support has offered a refurbished replacement device.

What You Should Do Right Now

  • Do not install the TopoActive 2026.10 map update, regardless of which device you own.
  • If your device is already in the boot loop, contact Garmin support before attempting any DIY recovery.
  • Monitor the Garmin forums for updates on an official fix.

This is a serious issue affecting one of Garmin's most widely used map updates. Until Garmin publishes a corrected version, skipping the update entirely is the only safe course of action.
